GUNSAN / OLD PORT, OPEN SEA

Gunsan — from the old port to the islands

A DIFFERENT CHAPTER OF KOREA

A port, a story, a change of pace

01 / Understand the old port

Start at the Modern History Museum, then choose nearby heritage stops. Look beyond the façades: the district also tells the history of colonial exploitation and resistance.

Official information ↗

02 / Leave a whole day for the sea

Munyeodo and Seonyudo connect by road. Choose a short coast or village walk on Munyeodo and an unhurried Seonyudo beach stop; travelling between them is a separate leg.

03 / Sleep in the city twice

The base plan returns to the same city accommodation after the island day. Keeping luggage there avoids a second check-in; confirm storage and late return arrangements with your host.

THREE DAYS / TWO NIGHTS

Three days, without rushing

This is an independent local itinerary, not a package. Add travel from your origin. Suggested visit/walking allowances are editorial planning estimates, not service schedules.

01

Day 1 / Museum, port & old streets

  1. Arrive, leave luggage where agreed and have lunch. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes for the museum if open; late arrivals can move it to Day 3.
  2. Choose a nearby old-port building or exhibition, then Chowon Photo Studio or Shinheung-dong Japanese-style House. Avoid turning the afternoon into a checklist.
  3. Check in and eat near your accommodation. Photograph façades respectfully and follow entry notices; these are heritage places, not unrestricted film sets.
02

Day 2 / Munyeodo & Seonyudo

  1. Confirm the outward AND return journey before leaving. Travel to Munyeodo for one short shore or village stop, then continue by your planned transport to Seonyudo.
  2. Have lunch and take an easy beach walk; allow around 30–60 minutes for your chosen section. Keep cafés and viewpoints optional, and leave return-journey slack.
  3. Return to the city for the second night. Do not add exposed peaks or a tidal-islet crossing just to fill the day; shorten the coast in wind or rain.
03

Day 3 / A slow morning & home

  1. Choose breakfast and one missed stop, subject to opening. Chowon Photo Studio is linked to the 1998 film Christmas in August; it is a compact visit, not a full-day activity.
  2. Collect luggage and transfer to the exact station or terminal on your ticket. Keep time for the final city transfer rather than another distant attraction.

Choose places with a purpose

1 / Modern History Museum

Start here to read the port’s trade and colonial history before looking at its buildings.

Planning allowance: 60–90 min
Best fit: History learners; an indoor starting point.

2 / Chowon Photo Studio

Connect a small street scene with Christmas in August, rather than expecting a large film museum.

Planning allowance: 15–30 min
Best fit: Film fans; a compact old-town stop.

3 / Shinheung-dong Japanese-style House

Read the colonial landowner history through the garden and exterior; the interior is closed.

Planning allowance: 20–40 min
Best fit: Architecture and heritage interest.

4 / Munyeodo

Choose one village/coast segment close to your actual stop. The island is a lived-in place, not a guaranteed tidal crossing.

Planning allowance: 30–60 min
Best fit: A short, unhurried island stop.

5 / Seonyudo beach

Let the sandy beach be the destination. Leave climbing and extra islands optional, especially with a bus connection.

Planning allowance: 30–60 min
Best fit: Sea views with a short walk.

CONNECT THE WHOLE JOURNEY

Getting there & island transfers

Without a car

  1. Day 1: Gunsan Station or intercity terminal → bus 7 toward Bieung Port → Naehang Sageori (내항사거리) → walk toward the museum. The express terminal has a different boarding location.
  2. Day 2 outward: bus 7 → Bieung Port transfer stop (비응항 환승장) → bus 99 → Munyeo 1-gu (무녀1구). For Seonyudo, board 99 in the Seonyudo/Jangjado direction again; do not assume every island stop is near your chosen café.
  3. Return: 99 toward Bieung Port → city connection such as 7 toward Gunsan Station. Return stops can differ from the outward museum stop. Save the stop names, last workable connection and a taxi fallback; city bus enquiries +82-63-443-3077.

Route pattern: current museum directions plus the city’s 21 October 2024 route file, reviewed 5 November 2026. This is not a live departure board. Save your dated return connection before leaving.

COMPARE YOUR BASE & TABLE

Where to stay & eat

Three bases, three trade-offs

All are independent examples, not partner placements. Room photos/layout links open the original provider or city gallery. No current dated room quote was publicly verified; enter your actual quote in the calculator.

Four meals to choose from

Choose by route and dish, not just fame. Current dine-in prices were not published in the checked primary sources; the budget uses an editable meal allowance. Raw beef and seafood dishes need separate ingredient decisions.

A wet-weather version

Swap the island day with the city day if the forecast allows. Use open indoor exhibitions, meals and rest when the coast is unpleasant; remember that Monday closures can affect more than one heritage venue. Sea views and sunsets depend on weather.

Adjust for your companions

With children or older travellers, choose fewer stops and ask about toilets, steps and rest points. Check the actual route with each venue if step-free access is needed. A short itinerary is not an accessibility certification.
